HCC Diversity Week
A week-long celebration of diversity is coming on the heels of Henderson Community College's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day program held on Monday.
Diversity Explosion Week is set for the second week of February with dance, Chautauqua, food, music, dialogue and film.
Here are the details:
- Monday, Feb. 8 -- The Notorious Steppaz from Henderson County High School will perform from 4-5 p.m. on the stage at Henderson Fine Arts Center.
- Tuesday, Feb. 9 --Michael E. Crutcher Sr. will portray Frederick Douglass from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the fine arts center. His program is titled "The Spirit of Frederick Douglass."
Crutcher is a retiree from the United States Arm, former assistant professor at University of Kentucky's Lexington Community College and a Douglass scholar. He believes his calling is to share Douglass' principle of freedom, equality, religion and self-esteem.
- Wednesday, Feb. 10 -- HCC's Multicultural Feast is set from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring a dish that reflects your culture or heritage to this potluck event.
The guest speaker will be Daryl L. Harris, assistant professor in the department of theatre and dance at Northern Kentucky University on the topic "Lift Evr'y Voice and Sing."
The Kentucky Humanities Council speaker's topic focuses on African-American music. For African Americans throughout Kentucky and the country, spirituals were the soundtracks upon which the Underground Railroad movement rolled.
Freedom songs later helped to pave the way toward true liberation. Because of its particular geographical and political positioning, Kentucky gave birth to its own unique musical expressions. Harris takes the audience on a musical history tour through hurt, healing and happiness.
- Thursday, Feb. 11 -- From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Joe's Place in the Student Center, there will be a panel discussion/dialogue led by HCC students of diverse ethnicity.
Later that evening, HCC's Spring 2010 Film Series will show "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940, 129 mins., black & white) at 6:30 p.m. in Room 310 at Sullivan Technology Center. Following the film, there will be a discussion led by Katie Griffis and Bill Dixon.
