The Hill, Henderson Community College’s student newspaper, won a total of 29 awards at the annual Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association Conference held in Bowling Green and hosted by Western Kentucky University on Feb. 27 and 28. A total of 17 college and university newspapers participated in the competition. Speakers from around the state presented sessions on February 27 covering a variety of journalism related topics from headline writing to new media and workshops on photography. The awards ceremony for the competition was held on February 28. A total of 110 students and advisers attended the conference held on the WKU campus. Earning first place awards for The Hill were B.C. Thomas in news story and opinion page design, Joe Belt in editorials, Kristina Smith in advertising copy, Tyler Young in advertising copy, and Brent Dunn in feature photos. Second place awards were presented to Thomas in continuing news and sports headlines, Belt for editorials and opinion page layout, Chris Wright for feature headlines, Trena Lee for general interest column, Brent Dunn for news photos, Brent and Debbie Dunn for photo essay, Smith for advertising art, and Shofner for deadline copyediting. Third place awards were presented to Thomas for sports page layout and news photos, Tabitha Shofner and Jamie Mahurin for cartoon strip, Wright for reviews, Kyle Greenwell for sports features, Debbie and Brent Dunn for photo essay, and Young for advertising design. Honorable mention awards went to Thomas for front page design and sports photo, Leo Curtis for commentary, The Hill staff for overall layout, Debbie Dunn for feature photos, and Young for advertising design. Adviser Tony Strawn also attended. The Hill competes in a division with Asbury College, Kentucky State University, Georgetown College, Bellarmine University, Lindsay Wilson University, Transylvania University and Elizabethtown, Somerset, Jefferson and Southeast Community and Technical Colleges.
